Senior Biochemist

BioSyntha is seeking to appoint a Senior Biochemist to support the company’s proprietary programs developing bioprocesses for synthesis of higher value chemicals from C1 feed stocks. You will be involved at the forefront of industrial biotechnology translating novel science into real industrial processes.

Role

  • Provide innovative contribution to the design and optimisation of biochemical routes for efficient production of target chemicals.
  • Design and implement in vitro/in vivo enzyme assays for the purposes of candidate gene selection and pathway flux optimisation.
  • Design and implement screening protocol for novel enzymes activities.
  • Provide supervision and support for junior colleagues with respect to their personal development and the maintenance of technical excellence.
  • Contribute to the writing of grant applications.
  • Contribute to the writing of patent applications.

Qualifications/expertise

  • Likely to have a PhD in chemistry, biochemistry or a related subject together with at least 3 years postdoctoral experience, ideally some of it working in a commercial environment
  • A good knowledge of  microbial biochemistry with respect to enzymology, bioenergetics and metabolic pathways
  • Chemical analysis (HPLC, GC and MS)  skills would be advantageous
  • Enzyme evolution experience would be advantageous
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to write clear and concise reports are essential

Research Assistant/Scientist (Fermentation)

BioSyntha is seeking to appoint a Research Assistant or Scientist, depending on experience, to support the company’s proprietary fermentation programs

Role *

  • To support the day to day needs of the fermentation department
  • To prepare media and reagents
  • To set up and operate fermentation equipment
  • Assist with the maintenance of fermentation and associated equipment
  • Contribute to the design and interpretation of experiments
  • Conduct experiments in a diligent and safe manner
  • Process, analyse and record results accurately

* Appropriate training will be given as required

Qualifications/expertise

  • Minimum requirement of a BSc in microbiology or a related subject.  At least 2 years graduate experience required for the level of Research Scientist.
  • Experience using hplc would be advantageous
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to write clear and concise reports are essential

Analytical Chemist

BioSyntha is seeking to appoint an Analytical Chemist to lead the company’s chemical analysis requirements.

Role

  • To lead the company’s analytical support ensuring the highest analytical standards are implemented and maintained.
  • To develop and fully validate chromatography methods (predominantly hplc) for identification and quantification primarily of organic analytes from whole-cell fermentation samples and in vitro systems.
  • Provide clear, concise and accurate data reports.
  • Troubleshoot primarily hplc systems and carry out routine non specialist repairs.
  • Operate a detailed logging system for all equipment and analytical consumables.
  • Negotiate and maintain service contracts for all analytical systems acting as the source of contact for equipment engineers when on site.

Qualifications/expertise

  • Minimum requirement of a BSc in chemistry, or a related subject with an MSc in analytical chemistry, with 3 years experience in a commercial environment.
  • A thorough knowledge of hplc method development and operation for reverse and normal phase analysis
  • Experience with preparative hplc and gc would be an advantage
  • An understanding of MS operation including MS/MS interpretation and nmr would be an advantage, but is not essential
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to write clear and concise reports are essential

6 month contract – Molecular biology support

As part of our growing team of scientists, we are seeking to appoint a Molecular Biology Research Assistant on an initial fixed-term contract of six months to contribute to the production of genetic tools for rapid engineering of an acetogenic microorganism. This role would be ideal for a new graduate (or 2-3 years experience) looking to consolidate a career in biotechnology R&D.

You should hold a (minimum) B.Sc. in molecular microbiology or a related subject, ideally with significant and demonstrable practical molecular cloning experience. This position will challenge the successful applicant and will require flexibility, perseverance, and technical ability.

Molecular biologists/ strain development scientists

We are seeking two experienced Strain Development Scientists to join to our productive and growing team. This is an exciting and varied role in which you will design and undertake experiments to engineer novel acetogenic bacteria for the production of commodity chemicals using leading-edge molecular biology approaches. The role requires a creative thinker who can apply their knowledge and experience of strain development and metabolic engineering in an innovative and practical way.

You will be a Ph.D. or experienced M.Sc. with R&D experience in either an academic or industrial environment. Experience of chromosomal recombineering, particularly in Clostridia, would be advantageous. Importantly you will have the desire and enthusiasm to contribute to this growing area of science in an applied industrial setting. This position will challenge the successful applicant and will require flexibility, perseverance, and technical ability.
